Automated Groundwater Levels and Salinity

Long-term sustainability of aquifers through efficient management.

Groundwater modelling and data analytics

Pressure on aquifers continues to grow; irrigated agriculture is the biggest consumer of groundwater worldwide. ADASA offers intelligent management of aquifers, guaranteeing sustainable exploitation while minimising environmental impact.

Overexploitation, the reduction of recharge volumes by infiltration due to deforestation, and changes in land use have increased stress on aquifers. Non-regularised use of groundwater in arid areas or zones prone to drought is leading to the gradual extinction of these water bodies, leading to environmental deterioration.

Groundwater level and salinity control program interface

Coastal aquifers are particularly vulnerable. Marine intrusion into aquifers is a natural occurrence, but human interference can alter these contributions, changing permeability parameters or even the exploitation of the water resource itself.

The use of fertilisers, insecticides, pesticides and herbicides in agriculture further lead to the deterioration of the groundwater quality through their effect on filtration, creating consequences for water bodies that receive water from drainage systems.

The key to careful, efficient, well-planned and supervised use of these water reserves is having data and information on the quantitative and qualitative status of the groundwater bodies.

ADASA focuses on managing groundwater bodies based on gathering data that covers the entire information lifecycle. We start with the continuous measurement of the quantitative and qualitative parameters of the aquifer using piezometric sensors, multiparametric quality probes, flow meters and more. This data is collated, integrated and processed through various data analysis techniques, including hydrological modelling and mathematical models.

ADASA offers a complete solution, from the deployment of monitoring sensors to the development of analytical systems that create reliable information and reports to support best practice and decision-making.

Benefits

  • Monitor the quantitative status of the aquifer.
  • Study recharge and exploitation cycles to identify an aquifer’s water balance.
  • Ascertain how water quality is affected by the different pressures placed on an aquifer.
  • Record saline intrusion in coastal aquifers; implement and control palliative recovery systems, e.g. hydraulic injection barriers, artificial recharge with reclaimed water, pumping of the saline wedge.
  • Numerical models simulate a variety of potential management scenarios.
  • Optimise pumping systems.
  • Comply with environmental legislation through measurement and monitoring of the chemical and quantitative status of groundwater bodies.
  • In-depth knowledge of the hydric dynamics of the aquifer ensures environmentally responsible management and economic viability.
