Maintenance, preservation and operation of an Automatic Hydrological Information System in the Guadiana Basin (Spain)

The Automatic Hydrological Information System (AHIS) in the Guadiana River basin has been developed in the context of the setting up of flood alert and hydrological information management systems in the basin, which is 1000 km long and runs through three Spanish regions as well as Portuguese territory.

This AHIS is a powerful solution making is possible to ascertain, at all times and in real time, the basin’s hydrological and hydraulic status.

Designed to enhance the safety of people and property and to improve efficiency in the hydraulic infrastructure in place, this information system is responsible for capturing hydrological and hydraulic variables, transmitting them, processing them and presenting them usefully so as to aid water management in both ordinary and extraordinary situations (floods or droughts).

The Guadiana AHIS project may be summed up in the following points:
• A network of 222 monitoring points spread about the whole basin, at which all the hydrometeorological variables required for the system’s purposes are captured
• A communication network consisting of 34 points (repeaters and office terminals) as required to transmit data between the monitoring points and the BCC, and between offices
• A Basin Control Centre (BCC) at the new offices of the Guadiana River Basin Authority (CHG) in Mérida, where data are received from the monitoring points, processed, stored and presented
• In addition to the BCC, as the system was being implemented, a subsidiary control centre was set up at Don Benito, with the same capabilities as the main one. Both the Basin Control Centre and the various CHG offices have data presentation systems allowing the information received to be displayed

Adasa carries out preventive and corrective maintenance and preservation tasks designed to ensure that the hydrological data are transmitted continuously and reliably to the Guadiana AHIS Basin Centre. It also performs the tasks involved in operating the system, for both flood prevention and assistance in water use, including appropriate support in the administration of computer systems at the Basin Control Centre.
